The 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 editions introduce empirical research on linguistic meaning in philosophy of language and linguistics. Both are taught by Wojciech Rostworowski, with 30 teaching hours in each edition. Descriptions, topics and readings for both editions are listed below.
This specialisation block in experimental semantics introduces a broad range of modern tools and techniques used to test semantic hypotheses. Semantics is the branch of linguistics and philosophy of language concerned with the meaning of natural-language expressions, a particularly challenging object of linguistic inquiry. The rapid development of experimental semantics reflects growing interest in experimental methods. It responds both to the need to test and supplement evidence previously based largely on individual researchers’ intuitions, and to the increasing availability of experimental tools such as Amazon Mechanical Turk, corpus-analysis tools and eye-tracking.
